The Movement.
The Movement.
From the start, I had a clear vision for the movement. It needed to have a german-silver three quarter plate bridge and the crown wheel was to be placed under the bridge. As a total watchmaking noobie, I had no idea what kind of project this would end up being. When looking at the end result, it's easy to see that it was worth it. With its hand-hammered surface, polished screw heads and big bevels, this elegant movement definitely deserved a see-through caseback.
CAL. 109. I named the movement Cal 109 because that was my applicant number in the Finnish School of Watchmaking entrance exam. After a lengthy search, I found the piece of paper that had my applicant information. Well, it turns out my applicant number was 104... So whoever you are, number 109, this is for you. Fortunately, the meaning of angle number 109 is a message to get on with your divine life mission with passion and purpose. Doesn't sound too bad, so there you go, that's the meaning behind 109.

Hand-Engraving Goodness.Inspired by many classic movements, the Cal 109 also has a hand-engraved balance cock. As hand-engraving is a skill that takes years to master, I had to turn to a professional to bring my vision alive. First, I pitched the idea of engraving with a pencil sketch. We agreed that I would draw the pattern on the balance cock, and the ever so talented hand-engraver would then follow these guidelines. Gold plating gives this elegant balance cock its final warm hue.
