Juha Eskola N1.

Juha Eskola N1.

The story of this watch begins in 2016. A couple of bright-eyed watchmaking students decided to build a moon phase complication on top of the ETA 6497 movement. Moonphase has always been my favorite complication. Mainly for aesthetic reasons but the mystical aura of the moon has always fascinated me. The project started in 2016 was finished five years later in 2021. Uncompromising dedication to traditional craftsmanship and the original vision made this a project of many perkeles and sleepless nights. However, five years later, I'm overjoyed with the journey and the eventual outcome. This is my offspring. Juha Eskola Watch N1. Inspired by traditional watchmaking and the night sky.

Take a look.

The Movement.

Picture
Cal. 109 is a modified ETA 6497, which provides a robust and established base for the movement. Built on top of the movement, there is moon phase module. The backside of the movement is dominated by the three-quarter plate german silver bridge. The bridge is hand-hammered, beveled and polished by hand. Hand engraving and gold plating on the balance cock is the final touch on this elegantly designed movement.

The Finishing.

Picture
N1 features multiple different finishes. All finishes are purposefully selected, from the elegant black polishing on the screw heads to the rugged hand-hammering in the three-quarter plate bridge of the movement. One of the trademark finishes of the watch is the goldish tempering colour. It's on display, not only in the hands and hour markers, but also on the selected parts and screw heads.
FINISHING

The Dial.

Picture
The dial features hand-made applied hour markers carefully tempered to a perfect goldish tone. Glass bead blasting gives the dial a perfectly uneven yet refined texture. True to its origin, below the watchmaker's name, it reads "Leppävaara," the home of the Finnish Watchmaking School.

The Hands.

Picture
The stainless steel hands are hand-made from scratch. Sawn out of stainless steel plate and filed into the desired shape, the hands are a true showcase of traditional craftmanship. No laser cutting, no CNC, just a simple man with simple tools. To match the hour markers, the hands are carefully tempered into a perfect goldish tone.

The Case.

316L stainless steel 3D printing provides an industry-proven and robust base for the case. After 3D printing, the case is hand finished with lathe, files and sandpaper. In the finishing state, polished and brushed surfaces are applied for contrast. The moderate diameter of 41,7mm and purposefully designed lugs ensure that the case is a good fit for most writs.
